Okay seems like no one here understands what "relatable" means in this context. This doesn´t mean that main characters should be like the average everyday man but that their actions and motivations make sense. I´d never go on a rampage over my dog but i sure as hell get why john wick is pissed.

Both, kill the parents and mental problems have a purpose, the first make the character growth fast for in movie time, also it cut off a pair of character that are for logical reasons a stop button for the plot, either the parents are very involved in the plot or they are dead, it's easier to write..

Yeah let's make the MC relatable, like looking generic af, not having any particular skills, and then suddenly transport him to ANOTHER WORLD where he gets superpowers because WHY THE FUCK NOT and then gets surrounded by hot bitches who are willing to fuck him but the MC is too dense and retarded to even notice. "relate to people" nobody wants that I am beginner writer and what I've learned so far, by watching many interview with the greats is that people go to the theaters, movies and libraries to be entertained many people said to tarantino that his movies are way to violent, he himself said that his movies are for kids, cuz they are not real! it's just imagination so if you want to make it realistic, fine but don't expect people to be entertain irl people tend to avoid conflict, but on paper and screen you have to make conflict and you can't do that with half-ass character

And that is a double-edged sword, because it can be both the reason for comercial success, and the reason why everyone else thinks the movie is utterly stupid. But there IS a lot of movies and games with relatable characters, and guess what, they are plain boring, because they can't have any really strong traits. That's why the supporting characters take the spotlight, because they manage to be much more interesting. Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother is a great example.
